Trip Itinerary

DAY 1 | ARRIVALmap arctic road trip Fall edition
Arrival to Whitehorse and transfer from Whitehorse Airport to the hotel in the city center. Later in the afternoon there is a pre-trip information meeting scheduled where you will meet your guide and the other participants. The rest of the day is at your leisure. (No meals included)

DAY 2 | THE ADVENTURE BEGINS
In the morning we start the day and collect the vehicle you will be driving for the next week. Then we hit the road towards Dawson City. The drive from Whitehorse to Dawson already shows us a glimpse of what lies ahead on our way to the Arctic. You will be driving along the famous Alaska and Klondike Highways and there are stops along the way so you can take photos and take in the views. See the Five Finger Rapids and cross some of the great northern rivers: The Yukon, Pelly and Stewart Rivers are on our route today. We’ll arrive in Dawson City late in the afternoon, and you can explore Dawson on your own this evening. (Bagged lunch included)

DAY 3 | GOLD RUSH IN DAWSON CITY
Today the entire day is dedicated to Dawson City and its Gold Rush history. In the morning you join a walking tour along Dawson’s most interesting historical places, followed by a visit to the Danoja Zho Cultural Centre. After lunch, your guide will lead the way into the Gold Fields, down Bonanza Creek Road to Gold Dredge #4 and the Discovery Claim. Having learned a bit about gold panning, it is time to try your gold panning skills. A visit to the Gold Fields is not complete without a drive up the Midnight Dome, which offers incredible views of Dawson City and the Yukon River, but also of the outstretched Ogilvie Mountains to the North. Overnight in Dawson. (Bagged lunch included)

DAY 4 | ON TOP OF THE WORLD
Today we’re driving the beautiful Top of The World Highway with its vast landscape and breathtaking vistas. You will have the whole day to take it all in and take a lot of photos. In the evening we are returning to Dawson City, where you can party in Gold Rush style in the notorious Pit at the Westminster. Do you dare to try the famous Sourtoe Cocktail at the Downtown Hotel? Overnight in Dawson. (Bagged lunch included)

DAY 5 | "LARGER THAN LIFE" - LIVE.
After visiting the Pit and maybe getting up close and personal with the Sourtoe Cocktail last night, our small band of Arctic explorers is ready to leave civilization behind. We are driving the Dempster Highway and get to see what all the true North is about. Experience firsthand why they call Yukon “Larger than Life”. Be prepared to be amazed. We will stop frequently to marvel at the immense landscape with alpine creeks, craggy mountains and treeless tundra until we reach Eagle Plains in late afternoon. Here we find not a luxury hotel, but a true northern truck stop, a tiny spot of civilization in the middle of the vast wilderness. (Bagged lunch included)

DAY 6 | ACROSS THE DOTTED LINE
Today we cross the Arctic Circle. Although the dotted line is hidden under the tundra, there are lots of other nice features to see. As there are: the Arctic Circle interpretive sign, panoramic views of the Richardson Mountains, tundra, more mountain vistas and in the far distance a snowshoe hare – if we’re lucky. We’ll keep driving north, and the “Larger than Life” theme gets to a “very, very much larger than life” stage real quick, when we drive through Hurricane Alley to the border with Northwest Territories. Once through the last mountain pass, we descend into the seemingly endless Mackenzie River valley. We will cross the Peel River by ferry and continue to the Mackenzie River which is also crossed by river ferry. Another hour and a half gets us to Inuvik and our hotel for the next nights. (Bagged lunch included)

DAY 7 | TO THE ARCTIC OCEAN
This will be another fascinating day! We'll drive the newly constructed road and head north towards the Arctic Ocean.  Driving through the vast tundra and after 180 km we will reach Tuktoyaktuk, a small First Nation village. In "Tuk", the Inuit population lives a partly traditional life style with hunting, trapping and fishing but the oil and gas industry is also very evident in and around the town. The town is nicely situated in a sheltered bay on the Beaufort Sea. Our First Nation guide will meet us here, and show us around his village and tell stories about their life in the frozen north. By mid-afternoon we are returning to Inuvik. (Bagged lunch included)

YOU HAVE A CHOICE

option a | do I want a do-over?
You couldn’t get enough of this on the way north and you would do it all over again tomorrow?
No problem, you can do that! Drive back the way you came to visit your favorite spots again. See the landscape at a different angle and you’ll discover something new you did not see the first time around.

book this tripoption b | am I short on time?
Drop off your vehicle at Inuvik Airport and fly back to Whitehorse. Flying over the beautiful Yukon is definitely a once in a life time experience, and also shows you a bird’s eye view of the land you just crossed by car.

option a

DAY 8 | DO-OVER

When you drive back to Eagle Plains you will be surprised how different the landscape looks from a south bound angle. Gather new impressions of the infamous Hurricane Alley and the Arctic Circle you’ve visited just a couple of days before. You will have plenty of time to stop on the way to enjoy the scenery once more, and in the evening you might even find the Northern Lights dancing overhead. Overnight in Eagle Plains. (Bagged lunch included)

DAY 9 | THE GOOD OL’ DAYS
Again, the different angle of driving south on the Dempster Highway will keep you amazed of this unspoiled and rugged wilderness. Especially when you enter Tombstone Territorial Park, the views are quite different and equally impressive as before. We are returning to Dawson City for one last night of whooping it up like it was 1898. Overnight in Dawson. (Bagged lunch included)

DAY 10 | ALMOST THERE
For this last day on the road we depart Dawson for Whitehorse. We will reach our final destination early afternoon and drop off the vehicle. As an add-on option, you could keep the car for a couple of days longer to go and explore on your own. (Bagged lunch included) Overnight in Whitehorse.
