When is the best time to watch for Northern Lights in Yukon?

Autumn and Winter are generally good seasons to see the Northern Lights in Yukon. The long periods of darkness and the frequency of clear nights provide many good opportunities to watch the Aurora Borealis. Usually the best time of night (on clear nights) to watch for Northern Lights is local midnight

Why are the Northern Lights green?

Trip Itinerary 
  • Day 1 We'll welcome you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel in downtown Whitehorse. The hotel is located within walking distance of all attractions, restaurants, banks and stores. Afterwards there is time for shopping and dinner on your own. At 9.30 pm we’ll depart for our first night of aurora viewing. Weather permitting you can see the Aurora Borealis dance across the sky. Return to hotel around 1.30 am.
  • Day 2 At 10.00 a.m. we depart for a city tour. We visit Main Street, Train Depot, Log Skyscraper, Log Church, SS Klondike, Fish Ladder, Schwatka Lake and the McBride Museum. At 9.30 pm Aurora viewing: Watch the  stars and listen... Although it is said the Aurora does not make a noise, we think it does...if one just listens close enough.
  • Day 3 Today we'll make sure you will be on time at the airport  your flight home.
  • Extend your stay and add one or two (or more) nights
  • Day 3 (and Day 4) Day at your leisure or choose one of our optional day tours (Kluane National Park, Atlin or Skagway, Alaska). At 9:30 PM departure for Aurora viewing. Return to hotel around 1:30 AM.
  • Day 4 (or Day 5) Transfer to the airport for your flight home.

  • The Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights is a natural phenomena. Due to weather conditions (clouds) and/or activity level of the Aurora, there is a chance it will not be always visible.
  • Covid-Update: We will always follow up-to-date guidelines and recommendations.
    Current guidelines: maximum of up to 10 guests per vehicle - maximum of up to 10 guests per viewing cabin (indoor) - maximum of up to 20 guests at the outside aurora viewing area (very spacious and open) - Safety measures and operational plan are in place - please bring a face mask for when physical distancing is not possible (required).
